People look at me like I’m from Mars when I ask for heavy cream in my coffee.

PaleoPathologist was at Whole Foods La Jolla and asked for a 16 oz Americano with cream. Ha. People still think that fat is bad for you, the product of decades of bad science and bad government. I told the Barista that natural fats are not bad for you and he gave me the Martian look of disbelief. I said, “No, really, the newest science says good fat is good for you.” “Well, dude, we have some half and half over there with the skim milk.” I’m tempted to ask, although it would do NO good, why they don’t put out some heavy cream with the skim milk and then people could put half milk and half cream if they wanted to! Butter, cream!

We might finally be nearing the tipping point. Apparently Time Magazine, who did the infamous bacon and egg cover back in 1984 has published an update saying maybe fat isn’t so bad after all. Wall Street Journal printed an interview with the author of the new book, The Big Fat Surprise, on why many fats are OK.  Gary Taubes has been shouting from the rooftops for years. Jimmy Moore lost hundreds of pounds on low carb high fat. (NOT NOT NOT high protein by the way.)

And yet when I walk through the dairy aisle of Whole Foods, King Soopers, or Safeway, 95% of what I see is proudly labeled “NonFat” or “Low Fat.”  It is not easy to find full fat yogurt or Kefir.  PaleoPathologist loves the taste of whole heavy whipping cream in his coffee and is not worried about hurting his health, and thinks that giving his grandsons low fat dairy is just a bad idea.

By the way, Starbucks stores almost all have heavy whipping cream back in the refrigerator behind the counter and are delighted to indulge my tastes!

What have YOU heard that gets in the way of eating healthy natural fats?
