An addition to the famous Liver Post: Eat the Offal!

Dr. Colin Champ is a radiation oncologist and author of the Caveman Doctor website. He has written and podcasted for several years on nutrition, lifestyle, and exercise. In this post he discusses how the Masai, who are tall, well muscled, attractive people drink blood and eat the organs and leave the ‘scraps’ for the Europeans!  I happen to like liver but I was raised by farm folk who gave it to us periodically. High school swimmers, who absorb massive numbers of calories, are not picky eaters so thank goodness they gave me liver.

What gets in the way of your eating the good stuff instead of that wimpy muscle meat or (whew) chicken breast?

So do the predators eat the muscle or the liver first?

You gotta know they go for the “offal.”  Here is a photo to prove it. Liver? Full of vitamins (B12, folate, B6.) Full of iron. It’s a meaty vitamin pill.  Brains? Huge amounts of omega three fats. (go to the bottom to the fat section.) PaleoPathologist is a big liver eater. I’ve done brains a few times; once had Brains and Eggs at a little diner in Durham, NC and had some sheep brains in Thailand.

So, what do you think? Why do you or don’t you eat liver, heart, or kidney?

Where can you find Liver and Onions in Denver?

We’ve said it before. Most pathologists just won’t eat liver, and most Americans have unfortunately lost the taste. Not PaleoPathologist!  I’ve always liked Liver. Below is the Blackeyed Pea Senior portion (watch it out there) with broccoli, spinach, and butter which is going on the broccoli in a moment. The vinegar is for the spinach.

What does a PaleoPathologist actually DO?

There’s just no doubt that everyone out there is clamoring to know more about what a pathologist does in a cancer hospital!  We are definitely not CSI Forensic pathologists, who can figure out by DNA who the perpetrator was before the next commercial break. So as a public service PaleoPathologist, recipient of a 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award by the College of American Pathologists,  has decided to describe in excruciating detail my day.award resized

PrimalProgrammer asks PaleoPathologist: What is this Paleo thing anyway?

First I’d like to find out:  What is a “Paleo” Diet?

I haven’t really read up on it. Is it wandering through forests, picking up walnuts and strawberries off the bushes, hunting for food, and having a great time with the guys and fermented honey booze back at the caves? (I’m visualizing the starting part of 2001: A Space Odyssey here.)

What’s new about the PaleoDiet, especially compared to Atkins / South Beach high protein, very low carb diets?

Nutrient Density; what does it mean?

Eating a “nutrient dense” diet sounds terrific. Sign me up.  But what does it actually mean? Density in physics is mass per volume. So water is less dense than lead because one cc of water weighs less than one cc of lead.  Pretty straightforward. So what are we going to measure for nutrient density?
